It's called a motif. The "evil god" motif can be seen throughout the series, as a matter of fact I can't think of any FF game that doesn't have a godlike final boss (anti-religion propaganda perhaps?). FF6 and FF7 feel completely different and Kefka is nothing like Sephiroth. Kefka is a maniac, Sephiroth is emo. Kefka ruins the world, Sephiroth doesn't.

You forgot that Sephiroth wore leather and Kefka didn't, clearly the most important difference of all. Certainly the one, along with the difference in size of their respective weapons, that explains the difference in their popularity levels.

I think if you were to read this about VI without the corrections, you would feel as if something were missing from the plot summary. The same is true if it were just written for VII.

Both games have similar foundations, but they go in very different directions, imo. Not to mention that is only half of VI.

I like both games, but I think VI is better than VII.

I'm a 6 fan. I don't "hate" 7, nor do I think it's a blatant ripoff of 6. If that were the case, then you could reduce it down even further and argue that every FF is a ripoff of its father from 1 to 12. Of course they have similar grounds, but that's the whole foundation of FF right there. The worlds are connected, but no one really understands how; they're the same, but different.

Also, I do think that 7 gets too much praise nowadays, but for its time, I remember the impact it left on me way back in 1998. It was a thing of beauty. Of course, it was an incredibly, eyeball-blisteringly pixelated and blocky kind of beauty, but whatever. Now I would replay 1 and 2 before I'd even touch 7. Hell, I just recently replayed 8 just to avoid 7. (It doesn't help that I've counted 8 playthroughs of 7 and can't say even half for any other FF, and when only two other games surpass that count (Chrono Trigger and Metal Gear Solid), I find it difficult to even think about playing FF7 through again - even if it were a remake. :P)

For the record, 8 is my favorite. (Then 6, then 10, then 7. Yes, 10 is that high on my list.)

i personally hated VII and love III....but i spose everyone has their own opinions on it. i didnt like VII cause 1) one of the most loved characters was just tossed in last minute to give a love interest and plot twist, and 2) it was a generally cliche game with only a few endearing traits, like the materia system, that i did like. though the ppl that go on about not likin it for the amount of characters is kinda stupid when III had roughly 12-14 characters to choose from at the latter part of the game. however the story, characters, and geenral gamplay of III made it a more memorable game for me, and VII felt like a swift kick to the nuts with the shitty polygons(shitty even by the standard of the age), and unoriginal "dude wants to take over the world" story. "lets drop a huge meteor on the planet!!" atleast most other FFs find a more original way to have a villain destroying/taking over the world....

On the matter of characters in 6, I must concur. I'm a characterization whore, and I loved that in 6 you could either ignore everyone's backstories or complete any of MANY side quests to unveil each character's unique personality. The bounded non-linearity of 6 is my favorite aspect, because you can ignore characters you don't care about and still get everything you want out of it.

NNO. The Anthology version is a prime example of a port. Nothing in the main game was changed significantly (except sprite/font clean-up, localisation editing and those atrocious load times which I assume is what you're citing for the "worse"-ness of the game). I wouldn't even consider the GBA version a remake, it's more like a relocalisation port, because nothing else is really drastically done, save for the "bonus" material and once more cleaning up of the graphics, which is all but standard course of action in, what? a port.

Balthier, at this rate we'll see 5 and 6 on the DS before FF7 sees the PS4. :P

did i say "it is a remake"? no i said most ppl CONSIDER it a remake. and theydidnt just clean up sprites and add shit load times/content, they fucked with names of items, added bugs without fixing old ones(which is good they didnt fix the bugs cause they made that game easy xD 128MEvade ftw) and changed sound effects in parts that made it want to play the entire game with normal music playin on ITunes. it was a shit "port/remake w/ethefuck" and made everyone jump on the banwagon and start callin 3, 6, meanin most hadnt ever played 3. so boo to the noob FFers D: (thats a sarcastic joke btw....kinda)

What's your definition of noob? I've been playing these games since I was in elementary school, and I'm 19 going on 20. Calling it III or VI, in my opinion, is more of personal preference than anything. Besides, most people know exactly what you're saying when you say VI, whereas if you say III they either don't know or have to think about it for awhile.

I concur to this whole post. Except for the 6-on-PS3 bit, I really don't want to see the older FF's enter the bloated world of next-gen consoles lest they lose their charm. IMO, FF1-6 are best suited for remaking on the DS, not only because of the technical limitations of the console, but because it takes a lot less work but at the same time a lot more innovation to scale it up as such and then cram it back down again without it losing anything. 3 was a great example of this at work, and 4 so far is the same.
TL;DR: Keep my nostalgia away from your convolution, kthx :D

I have to agree with Ceru...it's only your opinion that it would take away the charm of the game. I just don't think the PSP or DS would do it enough justice, and besides I prefer the bigger screens in general.

Though I thought FFVI was good, I still loved VII so much more. This is most likely because I played VII first, but it really had so many more elements relatable to players of not only the fantasy genre, but some more realistic aspects as well. Thus the steampunk setting really worked out well in the game. That and Shinra was so much cooler than the empire
