In the character signup it says that you have to pick a faction but I don't see where it explains what they are. 'Lil' help please.

The roleplay is OPEN.
Despite that, I still have to stress the background information I provided in the other sticky thread. It's important to read it! It looks like a lot of information, but I've specified certain areas that are a MUST read.
Perhaps I've been a bit too idealistic by expecting everyone to read that much, but I've reduced the necessary areas to an acceptable amount.
Feel free to create character profiles that are as exotic or far fetched as possible. I've left quite an amount of empty spots in the information provided - spots like Governors, Monarchs, Advisors, etc. that can be filled if you want to take them.

Hi Roleplayers!
I've received a wealth of pms concerning how exactly does this or that work. I'm trying to explain as clearly as possible how the many aspects work, but I realize that the original confusion is really my fault.
I'm honestly having some doubts about this roleplay, but I'm still going to try and pull it through. The most definite cause behind the wealth of pms is because I think I'm expecting a bit too much - I've written a ridiculous amount of information, and I'm expecting a ridiculous amount of understanding.
With that in mind, I think it's a bit too late to withdraw all that background information that I'm expecting you guys to read and understand. But if the roleplay were to continue with all the confusion, it'd be quite a chaos hole.
For now, do you mind if we postpone the actual roleplaying and character signups until we understand exactly what this or that means?
Feel free to ask as many questions - or you can get mad at me if you want because it's honestly my fault - until we get this settled.
As the majority of the questions seem to be directed at how Soul Siphons work, I'll provide my own character, Soren, as an example.
Allegiance: The Red Unity, specifically from Extence, Vermilia.
Name: Soren Vaughn
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Soul Siphon/Primary Weapon: 1) Calligrapher's Brush, aptly named Silas after the pine wood that it's created of. The shaft, flexible but durable, is about a foot long; the end is finished with a long, horse hair brush. 2) Calligrapher's Ink. Thick, almost paint-like ink is protected by several thick glass bottles. The jet black fluid is composed of a black pigment mixed with Soren's own blood; a thickening chemical is added to the mixture, lenghening the life of the fluid while ensuring its consistency.
Secondary Weapons: Summon Cards, a deck of paper sheets embroidered with the Calligrapher's Ink. Different words composed with Chinese characters are elegantly noted on the pieces of paper.
Area of Special Ability: Practically defenseless against close range attacks, Soren is suited for long range, short lasting, and self-protected barrages. By using Silas in conjunction with the Calligrapher's Ink, Soren can manipulate the ink into a variety of different matter/energies - including fire, lightning, and kinetic energy - simply by writing the name of the matter/energy on a surface. The process is strenuous and energy consumptive. Through the use of the Summon Cards, however, less energy is required as the manifestation of matter/energy only requires an activation order.
As provided, the Calligrapher's Brush and the Calligrapher's Ink are both examples of Soul Siphons. The ink, however, is just an aesthetic addition.

If you want to relate antimatter vaguely to chakra in Naruto, the characters in Naruto use chakra - like our antimatter - to convert it into fire, or water, or wind, etc. It's not magic, it's simply a teachable human ability in the Naruto Universe.

Hola everyone.
The character signups are going great :) You guys can start roleplaying if you would like to; go ahead and start creating some background info on the situation your character is in now. As soon as we get a couple more players to join up, I'll start up the main plot details.
I don't think eventually there will be enough players as I had originally hoped, so I'll try and fill in some more spots. You guys can create more than one character if you like *wink wink*. :P

Wont setting up the main plot attract more players? Why don't you just start it already? O_o You don't need that many people. We never used to have that many on FFG.

What I mean by 'main plot' - I'm not going to explicitly and blatantly say "This guy is the bad guy, so all the good guys go and attack him." Rather, the integration of the main storyline will be subtle, tying in with the formation of other players' storylines.

Okay. I'll do that. I've been a bit reluctant since the beginning of the roleplay; I felt instantaneously after I created it that maybe it was a mistake.
Plot! Let's go!
EDIT: You guys can start roleplaying now as I've done in Extence, Vermilia. Make up a setting for you character: what kind of jobs he does, what kind of personality he has, etc - things that haven't been made known in the restrictive character signup sheet.

If your character is in a different area, then yes.
For example, if Roleplayer A has a character in City A, Vermilia - and creates a thread named City A, Vermilia - then Roleplayer B, who also has a character in City A, Vermilia, does not need to make a new thread.
EDIT: Btw, Fearless. Nice character profile ^^

Hey guys,
I think everything is going along great, but could you describe your character's location in the first post of the thread you created? For example, in mine I provide a brief introduction to Extence's environment/situation before talking about my character. That way, if someone were to move to a new location he could adhere to what you originally had thought in mind.
Also, because we're still a bit short of players, please feel free to create more than one character. I'm currently adding more characters myself to spur the plot along - I have one more key character that I'll add later.

Aha! Roleplay roleplay roleplay!!!
...is going along rather slowly.
I've never worked this way before, but would you guys prefer to hear the entire intended plot line - beginning, middle, climax, end? In working this way, we - especially you all - might be able to reach the goal with a clear path instead of blindedly stumbling around to reach the plot line's intention. That might spur the excitement a little more, even though it will spoil the surprises/plot twists (at least I was intending for them to be surprises...ehe).

Well I know I want her to be an artist, but thing is im stuck on her soul syfon or whats it called. ><
Yurian
Aug 12 2007, 11:57 PM
I see.
Well. Remember that Second Earth is not just centered on military activities. Not everyone is obligated to understand, carry, and utilize a soul siphon proactively. The usage of a soul siphon is just necessary during general secondary education (elementary school, high school). From there, a person can decide to carry on with military endeavors or switch to another area of interest. More often then not, however, the occupation would probably relate to the government, especially because Second Earth is 'somewhat' on the edge of warfare. During World War 2, for example, almost everyone had a job concerning the the war. Even artists had to create propaganda posters to help spur the war effort along. I'm not saying you have to take it that route, I'm just providing an example.
Take my recently created character, Candice Yuri, as an example. She doesn't carry a soul siphon, but instead works as a research scientist. Although she works that way, she doesn't involve herself (directly) with politics and the military. She does know, however, some sort of action oriented area relating to soul siphons because she received some sort of mandatory education concerning it.
I hope that helps. I think that if you think of this roleplay less as a story where each event counts, but more as a personal journey of your character - just like in real life - it will become easier to progress through. The only aspect of trying to tie your character's endeavors with the main storyline (which is being revealed).
EDIT: Concerning creating your soul siphon, a way to think of one is to remember that practicality comes before personality. A piece of armor is meant to guard some one first before being designed with a bunch of intricate designs. Going that way, what kind of tools does an artist use? If so, how can that be implemented with soul siphon characteristics? Taking it further, how can you make that artists' tool unique to your character?
Momo
Aug 13 2007, 05:54 AM
Well good to know I'm not requied to have one, I mean, yeah I could use artist tools. Thats crossed my mind, but I've seen some done before, so I guess i'll just have to sit down and type some things out then. I might pm you with a draft or more question, so I hope you Don't mind Yurian. Thanks for your help :)

I understand there are a lot of questions concerning the background plot of this roleplay; I've created so many details that there are just as large an amount of loopholes and questions.
Here are some of the questions:
1) How many years ago did the rebels rebel in West Viridia?
If the World Peace was set in place 4036 A.A.D., then the rebel group formed somewhere between that time and the present (4331 A.A.D.). Looking at the character, John Kyberg, that I created - he is another leader pulling up a cause that's already been tried and silenced before. After all, humans inevitably rise up for something they believe in no matter what time period they are in. Going back to the question, I'll leave the exact date open.
2) To what extent is travel possible to the general populace (air travel in particular)?
It is as open as you see it as long as your creation fits in with the restrictions provided by already determined facts. For example, I've already specified that Per-Perel is off limits to normal civilians, which consequently includes any public air travel to that area. Of course, a private jet could be flown over the continent, but then the person would probably be taken to prison.
3) How xenophobic are civilans and to whom (allies, Gurein, enemy alliance)?
There isn't strong animosity between civilians of different countries, although there definitely is a wall between different nations, even within alliances. Because the entire world is composed of countries having different ideologies and different political/social systems, people aren't exactly excited about welcoming in different ideas.
The previous World War, and afterward the World Peace, was set in place over three hundred years ago, sealing off 'violence' with unsolved problems. Just like the cause behind an argument may be forgotten, the tension once held between is still there.
I think I need to make it clear that although I've made the mistake of creating too many details for a game that is best kept simple, I have to emphasize that I'm not the god of this universe. A Roleplayer is to create the story as he moves around, while adhering to the details created by other roleplayers. It's the creation of a story by the mutual agreement of players.
I hope that makes sense. I'm open to question, but feel free to create details that are logical but have not already been determined.

I need to know a bit more about these Auriels:
1) Do they believe in a God? (There absolutely no mention of a God in your plot background)
2) If so, what attributes would He/She have ,e.g Omnipotence, Omniscience e.c.t?
3) Are there any major criticisms of their religion?
4) If so, what are they?
5) Is this 'First Earth' another term for Paradise?
6) Do they believe in an after-life?
7) If so, what is it?
8) What is their current political allegence if they have any?
Yurian
Aug 31 2007, 10:24 PM
2 Momo: If you intend to make your character's story extensive, go ahead and make a new area.
2 Halfmetal:
1) No, they do not believe in a God. Instead, they believe in a theory that humans originated from First Earth, and therefore must return to it.
2) N/A
3) Like any religion, there's always criticism that comes along with it. After all, because it can't be proven, from a secular standpoint it's still an opinion. The fact that it's nearly groundless is a criticism that comes along with many religions i.e. Christianity. It's a matter of faith and improven miracles i.e. Eidetic Memories.
4) Answered above.
5) First Earth refers to the Earth we live on. After our Earth is destroyed some time in the future, humanity supposedly devises a way to travel to a new but similar planet.
6) I honestly didn't think whether they did or not. Feel free to create their idea concerning this aspect.
7) Not sure.
8) It ultimately depends on where you are. For example, many religious laymen today have many different allegiances because they're from many countries. Maybe some are more conservative, while others are more liberal. Although the Auriels are mostly located in The Red Unity, because they're still in many other areas, they can have many different political ideas while retaining their (rather vague) belief.
I hope that helps in understanding them. :)

Okay. I have just two more questions now.
1) Are there Christians, Muslims e.c.t. in Second Earth or is it just Auriels?
2) If not, is there anybody that believes in a God?
Yurian
Sep 01 2007, 03:47 PM
I did provide that there are 'other' religions, but I didn't explicitly state that they were this or they were that. I doubt that Christianity/Islam/any of today's religions - despite their influence - would last so long into the future. But yes, I'm sure there are some religions that believe in a God. Feel free to make them up if you like.

For your first question, my answer is no. For example, if a character is traveling from point X to Y, I would either A) create a new thread for the location of Y or B) Post in a thread already created with the location for Y.
For your second question, that is up for you to decide.

As posted in the Design Forum, I'm willing to paint/sketch one of your roleplay characters, much like the recent portraits I've done, in order to improve myself. The catch is that 1) You have to have posted at least 15 posts in the actual story area and 2) You have to have signed up before this post (the one I'm writing) ocurred.
If you are interested in getting a portrait of your character done, feel free to pm me. I don't have much time to do these - it takes about an hour to an hour thirty to do a portrait - but I'll try and do one a week.

I would like to emphasize to those who haven't roleplayed before that character conversations - like the one going on in Mountain Range, Per-perel Border - are carried out much like real time interaction. It's a 'You post, then he replies' scenario; controlling another character - speech, actions, thoughts, decisions - is NOT allowed without consent from the player of that character.
In Rophage and Ringlet's case, I'm assuming, they preplanned their character conversation in order to control each other characters. This is an example of a situation where you can control other characters. Besides that, please refrain from using other main characters without their players' consent.

Since Shin is the capital of the Freedom Power Rebels, does that mean that the Gureino Government would send army forces to there to try to seize the place? One of your documents of Second Earth's countries states states that "resources - food, weapons, etc. - are developed from the inside, and contact too is largely restricted save for the often occuring - and often violent skirmishes - against the desperate Viridian government and the preoccupied Gureino Government." This makes me think that all the fighting happens outside of Shin.
Yurian
Sep 11 2007, 11:12 PM
Contact in 'contact with the outside' can refer to direct contact, like in fighting; communication; or trade.
With this definition in the sentence, I mean that the only contact going on between Rebel Viridia and the rest of the world is cold hard violence. I'm sure there was probably an earlier attempt by a Blue-Gurei Alliance to stop the growing rebelry by taking over Shin, but now that the group has expanded to become a small country, going directly to its core would be a grand waste of resources. The only method, really, is to battle things out on the front lines - outside of Shin as you thought.
I hope that's clear.

If so, will I have to pass through battle zones?

Your arrow is pointing to Shin i think, which is the capital of the freedom power rebels, who will pretty much shoot a Gureino bloke on site, so yes you will be going through a small war zone.

I gave (wow that sounds dominative) the next post to Rophage, however due to the time difference of you being online when we're asleep, when he asks about 1 aspect of your character, it will take quite some time for him to make something from it, which will probably lead him to ask another question 0_o.
The mountain range thread wont last for much longer though, so once its done, we'll get together and plan the next thread, hopefully more effeciently as we could get each chunk done in one go :D

Well, it's difficult to post anything larger than a few sentences without controlling each others chars you see...me and Rings decided that we could control each others chars as long as we sent each other the posts before posting, as to decide whether that would be a good post. Its harder to do that across time zones but even harder not to control others chars over time zones...
Yuri, if we are gonna get the thread moving we will have to control your char a little but you can tell us what you want her to do.

Hey, what's a feudal communist state like? Can't imagine the two combined. Is it anything like the USSR? How free are their citizens?
Yurian
Oct 20 2007, 09:35 PM
Feudalism refers to the separation of classes i.e. upper, middle, lower. Communism refers to the system in which economic benefits, earned or not, are spread amongst the population. I suck at really knowing much about economics, but basically with these two combined everyone in each level shares the same amount of benefits.
Don't mind details like that though, as they really don't effect the roleplay. Indeed, I've regretted making so many details such as the one just explained.

Oct 24 2007, 02:44 PM
Well, I'm making a character who happens to be a diehard royalist. He'd much rather live in a state where the monarchy has great power, within certain limits of course, and restricted by the nobility. So an absolute monarchy would be preferable for him, if that counts for anything. He just doesn't trust democracy of any kind.
As for me, yeah, I'd rather play in such a state but a constitutional monarchy would give my character a different agenda. If I have to choose, I say absolute monarchy. But it's up to you Momo, your character is royalty after all, hehe.
How long has it been since the last World War? I'd like to know whether my character could have fought in it.

Yes, it's important to keep it active to attract new players, so that people don't worry about not having an audience after they take the time to post.

I agree with FearLess lol. I guess you could try and make a convincingly believable character from the future - and if you do, it'd be pretty awesome! - but don't worry too much about the concrete/background details. I made the mistake of over-detailing the background plot of this roleplay, only to find that a lot of it wasn't used!
I find that it's always easier to create a character with a personality type similar to yourself.

Hey, sorry to barge in here but I did have a question or two.
As anyone can probably tell I just joined the forum but I'm looking to get into the roleplay here. I'm not new to roleplaying so no one has to fear a noob entering your premises. I've noticed with forums and the roleplays though that all of them are different. This one certainly is and I was looking for a little guidance. Before I go asking to jump in somewhere, is there anything I should know besides getting to know things a little with the pinned information thread? Any help to maybe get me started would be greatly appreciated. ^_^

I'd have to agree, big RPs like this only work if you have a larger RP group, such as might be attracted by a mini RP section.
Ringlets
Dec 11 2007, 07:53 PM
Thing is, too many sub-forums made for new Rps could clog up the main index and make it look scruffy. Also the sub-rps could just end up two people posting back and forth, where as in the the current one there is always a chance of these threads converging.
Yurian
Dec 12 2007, 12:08 AM
I have to agree that it's difficult to move this roleplay along (lol I made it). It's a bit too complicated for a game that should be kept simple.
I'm not really sure what to do at this stage; very few people are actually posting - and that's understandable. There's no input to fuel an output.
Frankly, I'm not very motivated to continue. It was a good experience to just try this out. Opinions?

If all of you want a reform of the RP section then please do suggest ideas and come up with a plan of what you'd like the new section to be like. If all of you are happy with peoples ideas, I'll implement them. Obviously we'd keep the existing threads too.

I think that all of us or one of us, needs to redo the whole section from ground up. Considering we now know who participated, I think it should be a group effort of those who posted to make another.

Dec 12 2007, 03:38 AM
Okay. I understand.
I can come up with something completely different with more emphasis on action. Perhaps we can scrap this roleplay and come up with something simpler?
Well, im just putting in my two sense, i wasn't going to say any more because of the face that it just seemed like my idea was shot down with little thought but....
In my opinion, this rp was doomed to die once the idea came about. Sure people thought it would be a great idea but an rp like this one left little room for people to join in, mainly because no one wants to read what the rp is about then read what people have posted in order to be caught up. And with someone like me who has a single character for years its hard for me to reform or even make a new character just to fit into an rp.
The forums that i have been to have had a much better success rating because of this layout....
1. A profile database, one thread where members post their character profiles. And may have more than one character but no more than five, maybe less.
2. A subforum named with a general name such as..."The World" for instance where members make their own thread with the title of the RP and the first post explains the main storyline, or can be just a character post.
Example...if someone wants to rp but cant find an Rp to suit their character they make their own Rp, it might not have a story line but with enough people to join the story can develop itself.
3.In the Roleplay forum, the members make a sign up thread. Saying how many members they need to start off, it can also explain the plot of the story, and any other discussion.
Yurian

I'm sorry if I missed your post, Kit. It was not my intention to ignore you.
I agree with all your suggestions, and from what I understand I think that they can be fulfilled considering the layout of the current roleplay forum. This particular sub-forum is just for the 'Second Earth' roleplay.
