View Full Version : Versus Protagonist Name Thread
Pulse
Feb 07 2008, 11:09 PM
This thread is to list all the possibilities that could be for the name of the male protagonist in Final Fantasy Versus XIII. If you suggest a name, please use an online translator to translate the word into latin, this is just because I believe his name may be latin, but still to do with weather. As the theme for the compilation so far is latin-esque.
Nomura has confirmed in a recent interview with Famitsu, that the characters name is to do with Latin, please ONLY POST NAMES TO DO WITH WEATHER!
When you post the name suggestion, try to post the meaning of the word as well.
Some suggestions..............
----------------------------
Cirrus - Thin, wispy clouds that form high in the atmosphere as their water vapor freezes into ice crystals. Cirrus clouds are a principle cloud type.
The translation for Cirrus in latin is - ( No translation )
----------------------------
Cyclone - A low pressure system. It is a term variously applied to tornadoes, waterspouts, dust storms, hurricanes and even to any strong wind.
The translation for Cyclone in latin is - ( circuitous )
----------------------------
Frost - White ice crystals that form on a surface, like the ground or leaves of a plant. Frost is created when the air temperature drops below freezing and the water vapor in the air freezes into ice crystals.
The translation for Frost in latin is - ( gelu )
----------------------------
Haze - Tiny particles of dust, smoke, salt or pollution droplets that are scattered through the air. The particles are too small to be seen or felt individually, but they diminish visibility.
The translation for Haze in latin is - ( no translation )
----------------------------
Ridge - It’s an elongated area of high pressure.
The translations for ridge in latin are - ( promontorium, jugum, iugum )
----------------------------
Shear - It’s just a variation in the wind speed and/or direction over a short distance.
The translations for shear in latin are - ( tondeo, totonsi, tonsum, totondi )
----------------------------
Storm - Any disturbed state of the atmosphere that creates unpleasant weather like rain, lightning, thunder, hail, snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
The translations for storm in latin are - ( tempestas, procella, oppugno )
----------------------------
I personally like cirrus for some reason..... any other thoughts people???

I don't know where you got that impression from, Storm being a randomly conceived by "fangirls". If it's a joke then forget the rest of this post. xD;
In a couple of other sites, specifically the french ones I've visited, Storm does seem to be the speculated name. (I think) this conception is linked to his "gloomy" looking character, which everyone (including myself) at the time thought that was how he was going to be. But uh, yeah, what with the revelations Nomura made now, we can basically shit on that suggestion.
I hope they don't name him storm. Storm is a very horrible name to give him. Storm is the name from the girl in X-men.. ._. I want him named something awesome and cool. Like from the other Final Fantasy's. Examples:Cecil, Kain, Cloud, Sephiroth, Squall, Zell, Locke, and Seifer. Those are comendable names (I may have not caught them all) Still.

I think Cirrus is a good name.
Some other name that i think is interesting for him will be
Equinox - The time when the sun crosses the plane of the earth's equator occurring about March 21 and September 22.
Frost - A covering of ice produced by deposition (sublimation) on exposed surfaces when the air temperature falls below the frost point (the dew point is below freezing).
Rain - Precipitation in the form of liquid water drops that have diameters greater than that of drizzle.
Stratus - A low, gray cloud layer with a rather uniform base whose precipitation is most commonly drizzle.
Taiga - The northern coniferous forest; also a name applied to the subarctic climate.

Well, maybe they could like choose a name that sort of describes a type of weather. It's hard to explain. Like Cumulus or Stratus clouds, I probably totally misspelled those two words. I could see Stratus as a name for him or they could changed it a little to Stratos or something. I'm not sure, but they could choose a variety of names depending on how much they want to do have it connect with weather.

Unless Nomura = actual liez, this is unfortunately not possible ._.;
I agree with Amleya that the names we're coming up with are a lot more complicated than the ones they've used in the past, but if Nomura is going for a "real" feel and doesn't particularly want to continue the tradition of weather names, maybe he would want to use a name that's not obviously a weather phenomenon at first glance? They certainly sound more real than Storm or Thunder as a person's name, even if they're not actually used as people's names in the real world. Although things like Aphelion maybe don't seem contemporary enough to me to fit with the "modern world" part... ._.;

Well hopefully not too real and name him Prince Tom. Hehe, I kind of liked Shear and Ridge. He has an edgy look, they're edgy names. But if the XIII protagonist is Lightning, I think calling the Prince, Storm would be cutting a few too many corners. I'm not too worried about the names really. They've always managed to pick a name that fits with the character. With how Cloud or Squall looks, I can't imagine them being called anything else. Just like how I think Lightning fits...Lightning's look. Hopefully that makes some sense to someone.

Lightning is merely a codename, maybe they are going to hopefully step away from the weather names soon, its getting kind of lame. Maybe they'll just give them last names to do with weather lol. I hope since lightning is a codename, that she actually receives a name that befits her character properly, from what we've seen in the trailers and as you have said ''lightning fits lightning'' but what would fit her real name? I can imagine it being something clinical, clean and neat. << Clearly all meaning the same thing but you get the picture. lol

I can't see myself calling him "Gideon", lol...it'd be pretty strange though it's not gonna be him name at all. If his name has something to do with weather it'll be certainly some kind of "darky" weather type as shown in the trailers.

I think it could possibly be Caelum. The name seems to be on his car's number plate.
It's very very plausible all because Caelum is a south hemisphere constellation, the original name is in latin "Caela Sculptoris" which means sculptor's chisel, it's also known as "Cae" and it fits almost perfectly in the main theme since it's in latin as well, and latin was spoken by the people in Italy long ago.

I do like the name Storm, but the name Caelum both fits him and there's a high probability of that being his name. Then again, Wyatt is a good name, too. How does 'Caelum' remind you of herbivores, Whip? With the prounciation KAY-lum it doesn't remind me of stomachs?

I heard somewhere that it's "Carrot". Lol. You have to admit, there's something endearing about it.
I like Caelum, it makes the most sense and doesn't sound annoyingly cheesy. But I have feeling it's probably going to be something we have no chance of guessing right, though. I mean, look at Tidus; Okinawan for "sun". Did anyone guess that before his name came out?
P.s. Virgo = The Virgin... Why not?

Carrot is just taking the piss.end of.
I wouldnt want to speculate that his name was caelum. We may have certain individuals in reality place their name on their licence plate but is the prince really that high profile?

I see, Caelum could be his country name as well. And, about him being a high-profile person, he must be he's a prince at the beginning but he's about to become a king, of course it's what Famitsu scans tells us, so it kinda left us in a "dilema", imo.

If that does actually say Caelum it's more likely a country name or something, like you said Oji. People do have really gay things on their number plates like initials and their name with 1337 in though, so maybe... but I dunno, probably not. :aldo:

Your right in the high profile sense. But I meant high profile as in along the lines of flaunting the fact that he is a prince by substituting his name into a licence plate.IDK if I made sense?

I think I got your point up, but I guess it's undoubtely that he's prince since Nomura told us so, and I just can't imagine HUGE Jap magazines like PS3 Famitsu, Dengeki Playstation, V-jump making false assumptions, it's been told that "Caelum" (let's say it's the protagonists name to make things simple.) is in fact a Prince. And about the flaunting thing as for me, I see all this as a puzzle, we find little pieces and see if it fits, if it actually does we make such an assumption like his name being Caelum because we have a "base"to tell this.
Well, as I suggested above "Caelum" also fits for a Country name since it's been inspired in the italy-european design (see...a puzzle :P) and we also know that Caelum is a latin word which match with the "latin theme" and italian since, Latin was spoken in the Roman Kingdom long ago.
It was just an example...I don't think if I made things clear...but I think have info enough to mmake some guesses ^^!

You know... we don't even know if it actually is "Caelum" on the license plate. It just looks so much like so and people only agree with whoever certainly seems sure of the text saying so because it feels stupid to most people to further speculate.
If you pause the extended trailer around "00:15~00:17" timeframe you'll notice pretty clearly that the plate says "Caelum" and if you're just not convinced enough, look at the pag. 34 in the Famitsu Magazine(Feb. 2008), you'll see a picture, and this picture has a zoomed look at the plate, and it says "Caelum"...so i'm only making an assumption, it could be his name or his country name as well, I'm not sure of it, it's just a guess, and it's good to speculate sometimes with the information we've been given...and it's not stupid, imo, it's certainly not.

----Even so, there are still chances that it won't stay as "Caelum" as time wears on. Of course, I'm going for the fact that it does say "Caelum" since Pulse suggested we look at the license plate (months back), BlankChocobo put out a a list on what it possibly said, and I observed to pretty much confirm it and looked up the word in a print Latin dictionary: "Sky, heavens, the highest point." But then, I'm not deeply rooted to the word/name because it could change. If no one ever mentioned a Caelum, you'd notice that no one else would be thinking about it here.

Suggestions with meanings:
1) Turbo: Means whirling motion, whirlwind, onis, whirlpool, to disturb, upset, throw into disorder, confuse, unsettle, to agitate, hurricane, tornado in latin.
Although it sounds quite lame, it matches the protagonist's battle style.
2) Pluvia: Means rain or shower in latin.
About Caelum, maybe it is not the protagonist's name but his family's name (like the yakuza).

I'd really laugh if Tetsuya Nomura is actually surfing these forums and stealing names that everyone has mentioned here. But the chances of that happening is almost 0% yes?
And assuming I should add in a name or something, I'd most likely list in Gale or Raiden.
Gale because I think it's somewhat related to weather, and Raiden because it has something to do with thunder and lightning.
