eh I guess I create a topic again. This time it is from a company known as Level 5. Makers of Rogue Galaxy, Dark Cloud, and Dragon Quest VIII. This time they are making another RPG, one sure to impress.

First off, the japanese website: http://www.level5.co.jp/products/shirokishi/index.html

Second, some pictures. The-Magicbox (www.the-magicbox.com) and IGN (www.ign.com):

Third, the video. Gametrailers (www.gametrailers.com):

Fourth, the press. IGN (www.ign.com):
"September 22, 2006 - Level 5 made the PS2 sing with Rogue Galaxy and Dragon Quest VIII. Judging strictly by the early screenshots in Famitsu, it seemed that the team's first PS3 project, White Knight Story, wouldn't be the technological marvel that those two titles were.

And then I saw it move.

Sony Computer Entertainment is airing a short trailer for White Knight Story exclusively in its PlayStation 3 theater here at the Tokyo Game Show. The trailer consists of a short game play sequence where the main characters run about over an expansive forest field, encounter some enemies, then face off against a boss.

This may sound like a typical RPG demo. But wait until you see White Knight Story in motion. In our early preview of the game, we posted some comments from Level 5's Akihiro Hino, the producer of the game, regarding the title's focus on animation. He wasn't just hyping up his game; White Knight Story looks like no other Japanese RPG before it thanks to its next generation animation.

In a typical RPG, when you instruct one of your characters to perform a sword attack on in enemy, the character will jump at the enemy, slash his sword, then jump back. The enemy might block the attack, or might take on the full blow. Either way, the sword will probably pass right through the enemy.

That's how RPGs looked before White Knight Story. With Level 5's animation system, swords realistically strike other swords and shields, rather than cutting right through characters. If a character blocks an incoming attack, you'll see his shield go up and physically block the sword. The collision is perfect. In White Knight Story, two characters sparring really look like they're sparring.

From a modeling and shading point of view, White Knight Story is a pretty good looking next generation title, with distant views of its natural landscapes and smooth, at times surreal camera movement. See it in motion, with the most realistic animation ever seen in the genre, and you'll understand what the next generation of RPG visuals is all about. The game's battle scenes look less like gameplay footage than they do the hand scripted sequences that we've seen in countless RPG cut-scenes before.

The TGS demo shows the characters and enemies performing a number of moves over the course of a single battle. The battle starts with your three allies splitting up to take on the three enemies. The main character engages in a sword fight with one of the enemies, and quickly lays waste to him. He then
grabs a second enemy, allowing a female party member to take him out. The third enemy attempts to flee, prompting everyone in your party to follow in pursuit.

This is where the White Knight of the title enters the scene. Your party members are stopped by a giant fire beast. One member runs into attack, but is batted away. The main character tells the female character to step aside, as he shouts out a chant and transforms into the White Knight. The 7-meter alter form charges at the fire beast and leaps in for an attack. Just as you're getting hyped up to see the game's animation engine work on large scale enemies, the demo comes to a close.

White Knight Story looks far along in development. It has all the menus and maps in place, it has attractive titles that introduce new areas and bosses, and it even has voices, with English subtitles (which we presume were specially prepared for the TGS version).

Hopefully this is an indication that we'll get a chance to experience what could be the next generation of RPG gaming in the not-so-distant future."

Lastly, My two cents:
So far the game looks nice and very surreal. The battle has combat that resembles the depth of animations like Knights of the Old Republic. It also looks to contain the script of Final Fantasy XIII, since that game also lets you choose commands out like a menu which allows it to put together a show for you. Mind you I hate the map selection screen but that is only a small problem if this can continue to look the way it does.

Holy shit, i've only seen half of the trailer so far but it is freakin' awesome. This looks like it's going to be a crazy game. I love Level 5's games, I wonder if they will come out with Dark Cloud 3. (goes to watch rest of trailer)

Snap... I have to get this game.

That game looks great! :D Everything looks very realistic. I cant tell whether its real gameplay at parts or pre-rendered. It looks very fluid. I dont really like how the guy runs though.

I think that it could be a little confusing at first cuz there is a lot going on but after a while you will probably get used to it.

Ive seena video for this, and I have to say the battle system looks fairly good. and of course the graphics are spectaular, the three characters that I saw all seemed quite interesting, I hope this one comes out very soon after the ps3 release, it looks extremely good.

Yeah I hope so too, it looks a little farther along than some other games that I have seen so far. Damn the game stores in my area aren't taking anymore pre-orders. I wonder if i'll need one. The guy I was talking to seem to not like the PS3, he told me I probably won't need a pre-order though. I wonder if he's right.

i think he is, 600 dollars is alot of money and from all the people i've heard from, they aren't going to get it once it releases

And a title that is coming out in 2008, called Shirokishi [a.k.a. White Knight Story], which is an amazing RPG [with] very rich and deep online features., I think will be a global hit as well.

I kind of don't want my to put my face up on a character...people wouldn't want to play with me online and say "black people weren't fighting in the European dark ages". Which they were just so you know.

And thank you Shana for bumping my awesome thread!

The latest issue of Japanese publication Weekly Famitsu featured an interview with Level 5 president Akihiro Hino. The company's latest project White Knight Story for the PS3 is a fantasy-themed game where the protagonist must rescue the kidnapped princess. As you complete quests in each area, you begin to unlock other areas and eventually players will be able to explore the entire world map.

During the recent PlayStation Premiere 2007 event, a new battle scene was shown between a group of large enemy creatures and the White Knight, as well as regular-sized human characters well. Hino says, "In order to show the differences in size, it was important to place both large and small characters. The White Knight was originally set to be 15 meters tall. But then, it would not fit on screen if we put the small characters, so we settled for 7 meters in the final game which just fit in perfectly."

Hino mentioned that other than the rival Black Knight, there will be other types of Knights as well. He also described another scene from the same trailer, "There is a scene showing a city that's on the back of a giant creature. There are also giant insect-like creatures that are over 2 kilometers. We wanted to show the vast scale of this game."

Players can also customize their character's appearance. Faces such as those of Japanese celebrities were used as an example to show how much detail the face of the character can be changed.

The trailer from the recent PlayStation Premiere 2007 event and more importantly, a playable demo will be featured at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in September.

there is only one word to describe the new trailer

EPIC!

the music was great, the presentation was great, everything was great about it

also did anybody notice that the guy with long ears that was sitting in front of Lenard in the flying thingy looks exactly like Osmond from Dark Cloud 1 and 2? I think it's him, this also means that there is high chance of seeing a robot called Steve in this game

A handful of bad things about the Trailer.
- That chick singing ruined the good music.
- You can totally see up the pink hair girls shirt in the town shot (black laced panties).
- More giant Escalflowne mechs. Now I love them but having every retard on your team get one is stupid. Just as stupid as there being three Immortals on your side in Lost Odyssey instead of just two (one would be perfect though).
- Cliche evil japanese villain voice. He is a god damn hack.
- The characters are the most generic shit ever. I want the dude from Mass Effect, he isn't generic just Western with facial hair (but I do like that guy with the beard).
- FMV's: This is 2007, stop using them.

Good points.
- Giant Escalflowne mechs. Oh I love me some Escalflowne.
- nice music.
- One mech/monster is a giant flame thrower.
- I want this game.

Hmmm. This game looks pretty good but im still undecided about the battle system. It looks a little slow...

The trailer was cool though. I like how you can customise the characters.

I wonder why they went with the Kingdom Hearts kind of graphic style. D:

Looking at the thread creators name, I am sure I will enjoy this too. Please don't spew that "You look into things too much you won't have fun" type of crap. I enjoy ripping things apart so I can find the problems and great things before it is even detailed on. If you don't find that interesting then we aren't on the same page here.

And I really hope everyone on your team doesn't get a mech armor. That would be as bad as everyone using different weapons or being a different element.

Falls into the group of trying to make "everyone different". They can be different and all use the same weapon. A weapon does not have to classify a character. Sadly though that is normally what is used to do. Shit Magna Carta (PS2) had characters that used a lot of the same weapons (except Chris and eonis) and they were all different.

so what? I fail to see how everybody using different weapons makes the game any worse

Um, I am talking about it being used as a catalyst for the characters to be different when it isn't needed. They act like the weapon makes the character which it doesn't. That is what I am saying.

You know what. I'll use another example. Xenogears: Fei, Citan, Maria, Chuchu, and Rico use punches and kicks; well Citan later gets a sword. They are all different characters in the way they act, they don't need "unique" weapons to base their character off of.

but different weapons do differentiate between characters, I mean you can't have a badass like Auron wielding a staff(try giving Basch a staff to see what I mean) and somebody like Vivi with a spear

I understand what you mean by a character not needing a different weapon to be special but a it certainly adds to the character

That is the main problem I see. It doesn't, people just place them in stereotypes like they don't work. Auron would look fine with a staff, the sword doesn't make his character, guardians in FFX weren't just knights/samurai but any and everything (Does a sword add to Tidus' character? no). My Basch is weird like that because I play around with weapons and he isn't good with a staff but I don't look at him and say he is a "sword" but a "gun" does give him a nicer look. Vivi with his traditional grab would seem a little out of place but still not something shocking. Steiner would been a better choice for an example given the armor and wielding a dagger.

I understand what you mean by a character not needing a different weapon to be special but a it certainly adds to the characterWhat does it really add? If you saw a big angry black guy wielding a giant club would you think he is just a thug or main damage dealer? But what if that guy was the healer and the club was also as a tank to hold herbs?

That is using characters and weapons to their fullest. Not clinging them in huge stereotypes of silent warrior, frail mage, and loudmouth thief.

On a on-topic note. I do like that the main guy and the older man (don't remember name) both have swords. Hopefully I can choose what my custom character can use even considering his look. Scarred up mage? Yes please.

OK so let's suppose that Vivi used a spear, how exactly would this tie into him being a black mage(which is part of his story)? or Steiner using a hammer and how would that tie into him being a Knight(which also happens happens to be part of his story)?

Balthier wasn't stereotypical but he used a weapon useful for him and fits into his story, if he used a bow then he would be using a Vierra's weapon

Why is he stuck to staves only when Eiko and Garnet can use rackets? Lots of knights used hammers...dude I thought you would know that. Swords are no where near as popular as people think. Spears, axes, and hammers/maces were the main knight weapons.

which makes him a healer who can deal damage as well which is different then a full fledged healerHe is a full healer though. The club isn't really there for damage. The giant club doesn't make his character, if it did he would be a wild barbarian.

although I still think that variety is important when it comes to weapons

"1UP:Between seeing its debut at Tokyo Game Show 2006 and spending some time with the playable demo on this year's TGS show floor, our interest in Level-5's White Knight Story has definitely risen. Going straight to the source, we asked producer Akihiro Hino and director Yoshiaki Kusuda a few questions about their upcoming RPG.
1UP: From the beginning of TGS last year, when we saw the first video, everyone, both in the United States and Japan, has been very excited for this title. What do you think has captured the imagination [of fans] so much?

Akihiro Hino: In terms of this title, we first wanted to figure out how we could actually bring out the qualities of the PS3 hardware. And what we wanted to do was to draw attention to the scale, the size of the characters, and the scale differences of the characters. And what we also wanted to do was to provide a fantasy story, where the hero is just your typical cool hero that everybody else wants to be. And both Kusuda and I are huge fans of hero-type stories -- the superheroes and even the Japanese typical robot hero kind of stories. So, we've always wanted to do that kind of a game, and when we were given the opportunity to work on PS3, [it's] something that we really wanted to achieve.

1UP: It is an incredibly beautiful game and I'm curious where the art style came from because it is so different from Rogue Galaxy.

AH: In terms of the visuals on PS3, we wanted to differentiate from [a] PS2 version. And when we went with the cel-shading, we found that we couldn't bring out the qualities of the PS3 in terms of bringing out the details and making sure that the scale depicts the kind of...well, when you're making something with huge scale differences, you still need to focus on the little details, and when we did that for the PS3 with cel-shading, it just didn't come through. So, in that regard we went with a different style.

Yoshiaki Kusuda: I agree with that, but then more so [in the] art direction. We're really working hard on making the environment and the visual settings stand out -- it is still a work in progress, and we're working on it very hard at the moment, so it will only continue to improve from this point.

1UP: In the combat we've seen in the videos, the system showed magic and blocking, but in the demo we only got to see part of that. Can you talk a little bit about what the final combat system you have imagined will be like?

AH: I'm not sure how much you where able to get into the game at the show floor, but the current combat system we're showing does have the function slots, where you can plug in different attacks yourselves, and use it in the combat, but this customization system is still a work in progress, and will also continue to evolve as development goes on. In terms of the animations and the motion set, we're still adjusting it at this point, so what you saw on the floor may look a little rough around the edges, but these are points that we are still evolving at the moment. Our goal is to make sure that this game will rival an action game from a visual standpoint in terms of the motion and the fighting combat system.

1UP: Just to continue on that a little bit: [regarding] the combat right now, all the attacking uses one button. Will the final [game] have only one button, or will it get more complex? Or are you intentionally making it easier for anyone to use?

AH: In terms of the game system, we want the game to be easily accessible, so we will stick to the one button system where you can play the combat using one button. But it is still an evolving system and we are planning on putting in additional improvements to enhance the quality of game play. What we don't want to do is make a game where you just press the circle button quickly to beat everyone in the game; what we want to do is...the function slots that we're providing for the combat system...we want that to be incorporated into the player's strategy where, depending on the situation, they re-arrange the different slots with different attacks so that they can fight the enemy based off of their weaknesses and strengths and just incorporate that into their strategy.

1UP: In the demo, when I played, I made a set of combos and once I got the first press down it was easy to get the rest. In the final game will there be more to it?

AH: In the current demo, yeah, we only put in the combo system in the current state; however, we are planning on changing this where...one thing to keep in mind is that, it looks like an action game but it plays like an RPG. What we were trying to do with these function slots is that to use the more powerful combos, you will have to pay a price for it. It may use up more of an energy standpoint, but what we want to do is make the players think about the enemies that they are fighting, and change up their combos accordingly. And if that's not done correctly, the combos wont hit or connect correctly. That will be part of the main strategy of this game.

1UP: The demo ended very dramatically with the transformation into the White Knight. Could you finish the interview by talking a little about the White Knight, how fighting as the White Knight will be different than fighting with your regular party?

AH: The way we want the White Knight to be incorporated into the gameplay is when the party encounters and enemy that is way too strong for them to take on in their normal forms, [they] bring out the White Knight, as the White Knight is much more powerful and offers a much more powerful arsenal to take on the enemy. But, we're not going to provide a free-for-all. The White Knight does have a time limit, so it has to be incorporated into the strategy, and the players have to pick and chose when to best utilize the White Knight."
