VADD(Victims Against Drunk Driving)

He was wet. That was the first thing he noticed. He looked up, dazed. He could feel a hot fluid pouring from his forehead, and did not realize for awhile that it was blood. There was a steering wheel in front of him, spinning wildly out of control. He instinctively gripped it, trying to steady the wheels he could feel grinding beneath him, trying to get traction on whatever treacherous surface he was driving on. Alert and heart pounding, he managed to stop the car from accelerating. It came to a stop, and he breathed a sigh of relief.

Undoing his seatbelt, he tried to open the door but found it was jammed. Alarmed, he crawled over to the other side and tried the passenger door. It was jammed as well. He tried all four doors twice over, but found all of them broken. When that didn’t work, he tried to reverse. Just his luck, the wheels were stuck. He tried again and again to get the car moving, but it would not yield. Agitated, he started crying for help.

“A hell lottta good that’ll do,” he thought bleakly. It was raining so heavily he could barely hear himself scream. Besides, who would be outside in this kind of weather? He slumped onto the steering wheel, dejected. Sobbing considerably, he contemplated the past few hours.

His head was still hazy from the alcohol; there were many large gaps in his memory. The most recent event that he could recall before the accident (“Yeah… I had an accident didn’t I?”) was seeing a motorbike passing by and thinking how he would’ve loved to own one just like it. Before that… He was at a club. There were people dancing, and bright lights that had hurt his head. After several drinks he wasn’t feeling well so he decided to leave, but when he went to tell his girlfriend she said she wanted to stay, she was having fun. Thank god for that. Anything between that time and waking up the previous morning was completely blank.

He sighed and massaged his temples. Maybe if he was lucky someone would find him the next morning after the rain was gone. Then again, who knows where he was? He had a feeling he left the road a long time ago. What if he was so far away that no one would ever find him and he’d starve to death?! The thought of it made him panic. He forced himself to think that there was no way he was that far away from the road, that someone was bound to find him sooner or later. He calmed down a little, but the fear was still there, hiding in some dark corner of his mind, ready to emerge at the slightest trouble.

As if the Devil himself had heard, the car suddenly jerked forward, throwing him back and banging his head against the back of the seat. Surprised and terrified, he tried to reverse again, but it was too late. The mud was determined not to let its prey escape. The car slowly slid along the ground, ignoring all his efforts to stop it.

It came to a sudden and violent stop, this time knocking his head against the steering wheel. A dull but intense pain shot through him as he remembered the cut on his forehead. He slowly got up and turned around to look through the window. He could see mud all around him. It wrapped it self around the car, pulling it further and further in, until it was all around him, pressing itself tightly against the windows, blocking out all traces of light.

It was pitch black. All he could hear was the steady moaning of the car as it was slowly being compressed by the weight of the mud. He felt around for the light switch, but his hands met nothing but air. After what seemed like hours of blindly groping around, he finally gave in, resting his hands on the cold glass, the one thing he could find. His fingers tightened as he felt a cold, slimy goo slowly envelop his fingers. Minutes later, the mud had reached all the way up to his legs.

It was now that he finally realized that he really was going to die. There was no escaping it. He felt an overwhelming sadness in his heart, as if his soul had already left. He wasn’t even hysterical anymore. All he felt was a colossal feeling of dismay and disappointment at his short life. It felt as though everything he had done all these years was nothing compared to what he could’ve done, and now he’d never know what that would be. “Things like this shouldn’t happen,” he thought. “Why is it that I’m the one that has to die?”

He couldn’t help but think about what he could’ve done recently. Maybe if he hadn’t left the club he would’ve gone on to live… Maybe even get married and have kids someday. He didn’t have any parents or relatives, and his girlfriend didn’t even care about him. He could admit that now. If he died right now, there would be no one left to remember him, and he would just eventually disappear, the only part of him left in this world a folder filed away in a cabinet that would eventually be thrown away to make room for more important information.

Tears flowed from his eyes. If he died here, there would be nothing left…

By now the mud had reached his neck. He had to look straight up just to escape it. Soon, it reached his mouth, and he gave off a gurgle. Stretching his neck, he took his last long breath as the mud completely engulfed him.

impressive use of language Rev. i must say, you have a gift for evoking emotions with your written words. it's very easy to flow through and the imagery is strong. usually with those kinds of pieces, it is hard to actually envision what is happening. with yours, however, i can clearly see him dying and contemplating during his last few moments of life. very well done. just curious, but what was the main premise for the assignment?

Thanks for the comments. ;D I might put some more stuff up as I get more assignments. And the assignment was just to write a short story. That's all.
