Whee, another thread dedicated to another awesome series of games, although I don't believe the series has an actual name, so we will just name it after the gaming company, Nippon Ichi! Now, this particular series includes the games Disgaea, Disgaea II, La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom and the mobile game, Mugen Keitai Disgaea. There is also an anime based off of the first Disgaea game called Makai Senki Disgaea.
They are all tactical RPGs, but they are much more awesome than most of the others I have played, with a basically endless game, if you want it to be, an awesome storyline, great characters, awesome fighting, great voice acting and just plain awesomeness all around.
The common thread between these games is the presence of demons, angels, demonslayers, priests and so on. Lots of those things! The first game in the series is La Pucelle Tactics.
La Pucelle takes place in a kingdom named Paprica. The story centers on a small church called the Church of the Holy Maiden, in the city of Pot a Feu. In addition to the normal roles and duties of a Church, they also have a group of trained Demon Hunters called La Pucelle. Two of La Pucelle's newest members are Prier, a sixteen-year-old girl, and her twelve-year-old brother Culotte.
It is said that the Dark Prince, favored servant of the fallen angel Calamity, will rise to scourge the land. But legend tells that when the Prince arises, a warrior known as the Maiden of Light will challenge him and restore the balance of Light and Dark. Prier hopes to be the Maiden of Light.
The second game is Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, which is also the most popular, by far. The story of Disgaea opens with Laharl rising out of an open coffin in his room. Etna, one of the castle vassals, is standing next to him, surrounded by various weapons. She explains that he has been sleeping for two years, far longer than he intended, and his father, King Krichevskoy, has died. Laharl vows to reclaim the throne, and the story progresses from there.
The third game is Phantom Brave. The main character is a 13 year old orphan girl named Marona, who has the ability to see and speak with phantoms. People fear and hate her for this. Some even cheat her and send her hate mail. Still, she harbors no resentment towards them, and is irrepressibly hopeful despite being lonely. There is one person who looks out for her: a phantom named Ash, who worked with her parents when he was still alive. He guards her and helps her do jobs for people. In an interview, the character designer Takehito Harada explained that Ash's scarf , as well as pale complexion and red eyes, are intended to give him a ghostly appearance.
The fourth game is Makai Kingdom. The story is about a self-proclaimed "Bad-ass Freakin' Overlord" named Zetta, who attempted to prevent the destruction of his world after Pram the Oracle claimed its destruction was imminent. Discovering the Sacred Tome, he found a passage that claimed that his own stupidity would be the downfall of his Netherworld. Infuriated, he burnt the book up, only to remember directly afterward that destroying the book would destroy his world. Reacting quickly to this, he confined his soul to the Sacred Tome and ventured to re-write his world into existence by having the other Overlords of Netherworlds write wishes within his pages.
And fifth and most recent game is Disgaea II. Fifteen years ago, a powerful Overlord by the name of Zenon appeared on Veldime and cursed its human population. Since then, all its inhabitants became demons and were to remain that way if the curse was not broken. However, a young man named Adell was the only human unaffected by the curse. Adell, hoping to break the curse, sets out to defeat Zenon and return Veldime to the way it was.
There is also the mobile game. Mugen Keitai Disgaea is a cell phone game based on the Nippon Ichi strategy series. It allows customization of your character for battle with various cards.
Now, the games are not truly connected, in most senses, although they are in some ways. It's more like a vast universe with many realms, planes, dimensions, netherworlds and more and each game takes place in a different one, but in the case of Disgaea I and II, the characters from the first one are in the second one, and in almost all of these games you can get characters from the other games are secret characters, which is totally awesome.
The fighting is 2D and very similar in each game, although better each time for the most part. It's awesome!
