Well an FFXIII blog on LiveJournal found out that the song is definitely Latin and they're trying to write out all the lyrics. I do wonder how soo many people know Latin though.
http://community.livejournal.com/ff_xiii/18431.html#cutid1
"omnia divident tragoedia coram amando(um) quae"
Ah so she wasn't saying DVD >_> almost understood one word there...

They teach it in several schools around where I live. My cousin used to learn but then the school dropped the course. I have some books that teach Latin as well but i fail at it.
I'm going to keep track of that site though.

can someone who makes sense of it PLEASE give us a bit info about the songs meaning - it wouldn't have to be precise. i just want to know is there anything about the "mr. no socks" or the plot hidden in it.
Personally - when I first heard it I thought  because I expected something loud and harsh but after hearing it many times it started to fit with it. Maybe all the action movies have brain washed me and I think "bang bang BOOM" is the only way.

When i done the translation of the song this is what i got (bear with me im no latin expert)
From the first verse
te-they/thyself
2nd word unknown
et-and/also
liberi-Children?
5th word unknown
faciunt-(could mean either)>>commit/cause/create
Numquam-at no time/never
excit-send for/summon
2nd verse
Omnium-everything?
dividit-seperate/divide
Tragoedia-Tragedy
prorum-clear? (when i listened again i thought it was said as coram instead which means face to face or you could say against)
amando-send away/banish
quae-(can mean either)>>which, what, that e.g WHAT cannot be avoided must be endured.
3rd verse( this verse is sung when versus guy starts walking down stairs and soldiers get ready to shoot)
Et-and
nocte-night
perdere-destroy
tua-your
^^^And to destroy at night
And one word i thought i heard before he summoned his swords was omniver which means bearing everything.

The lyric is so sad and dark... It suits the trailer and the character so much ><
I heard that the one who composed the lyric knows nothing about Latin grammar or sth like that. T__T Kinda disappointed when I heard that.
However, I like the melody and her voice ^^. All of FF's theme songs are so cool ><

They say the lyrics has something to do with a tragedy of the main character and how he has to face some punishment with the soldiers. Also, something about children's groans. Check out a video with the translations. I think there is one on IGN.com.

The one_neo bahamut from ffxii.net and me done our best at translating the lyrics from the trailer.
then i subbed the trailer with the translation and put it onto youtube-be aware thats the original fan made dubbed trailer on youtube but the translation isnt exact but its accurate

Haha. I'm not that good at the latin language because I haven't had the studies for it yet, so I don't know if the words are mispelled or what. However, I prefer the first translation better because it just goes with the trailer and so far how the storyline is going to be from what Nomura says. The second translation doesn't make any sense to me.

Yeah the lyrics that were first translated really do fit the images. At first I wasn't even paying attention to the lyrics/singing because I'm used to the different kinds of languages in Final Fantasy. But when I first saw the lyrics to the song it made me even more eager for the game to come out. Oh and is your mom a fan of it?Just wondering.

I don't get the lyric at all *cries*
I wish I know Latin but too bad, I don't
The 2 translations have the same err... general idea about the song but the chorus is translated differently
I mean...
A man is divided
he faces a tragedy and is sent away
<--- pardon my bad english but I have no idea what it TRULY means...Okay, I understand perfectly every word but the whole sentence doesn't make sense to me.
I'm not criticize any translation. I actually appreciate your hard working and great talent in Latin (which I have none). I juts simply don't understand so I just wanna ask.
I love the melody >< It's PERFECT!!!!
-------------------
My parents HATE anything related to Asia, which is funny because I'm asian. Basically, I'm banned from playing, reading, watching, listening to Asian songs, movies, games..etc
However, Final fantasy is an exception. I think my dad likes the graphic only so he lets me do whatever I want with it but only up to a certain level. If there's any FF festival, I would NEVER allowed to go TT__TT.
Thanks God that the second trailer isn't shown here... If there is I would stab myself and rebel if my Dad wouldn't let me go.

yh that would lead away from the theory that the main character himself is in exile but in fact is his kingdom being the only kind in ffvxiii's universe then it would seem secluded from the outer world where there could be so many places like the outer world
hope that made sense
Ultima Star
May 26 2007, 10:01 PM
I think that maybe his country it's been forbidden by ages, and that the country has a shard well we do know that his country has a crystal...but maybe because of this people forget that his country even existed!
Perhaps the crystal made a barrier around his country and only the people that know about the crystal remember his country and the people that don't know this also don't know about him and his country....well I think it could be like that----ok....I hope it made sense

Random comment: Japan ain't exactly the best place to go. One of my friends (who's flies everywhere around the world) said that decapitation is on the rise over there. 0_0
I got a comment from someone who said that the tittle was "Somnus Nemuri" instead of "Somnus Nemoris"....He/she said that Nemuri was a Japanese word that, when translated, had something to do with sleep/sleepiness.
Very cool, but the song is called Somnus -Nemuri-. A bunch of Italian fans translated the Latin lyrics, and they thought that Nemuri was the Latin word "Nemoris," but it's actually "Nemuri," a Japanese word that has something to do with sleep/sleepiness.
Somnus is the Roman personification of sleep. That's the comment he/she left.

That perhaps when you hit the opponents and completely bet them down and all of their blood is lying on the ground...from that blood new enemies appear well at least that is what I understood XD
Lifrasthir
Jun 01 2007, 02:58 PM
It could be symbolism..

symbolism? what do you mean by that?
Lifrasthir
Jun 01 2007, 03:25 PM
Meaning your theory could be right to a certain degree.
That perhaps when you hit the opponents and completely bet them down and all of their blood is lying on the ground...from that blood new enemies appear well at least that is what I understood XD
blood=new enemies could well be it. But, it could have to do with enemy nations, like their grounds...or it could have to do with with the evil inside someone...something like that.
Desi
Jun 01 2007, 03:31 PM
I take it more to be like: The more blood he splits of the enemy the more tension he causes between the nations. Their hate for eachother grows, their rift widens, and he'll have a multitude of more soldiers knocking down his door until he is overwhelmed.
Simply, you kill one they send out two more for you to fight.
Ultima Star
Jun 01 2007, 03:32 PM
you mean...that it depends on where are they fighting? is that what you said TF?
Lifrasthir
Jun 01 2007, 03:35 PM
No no, that was just a suggestion for the symbolism theory.
Desi
Jun 01 2007, 03:38 PM
You kill 500. They put you up against 1000. From the blood of the fallen troops they send out more to take thier place. But none of this is similar to a cold war, more so a full out total war.

Lifrasthir
Jun 01 2007, 04:53 PM
Is the name of the song "Somnus Nemoris" which is Latin. Or is it "Somnus Nemuri" which is Japanese...I guess...I got a comment on my video from some person who said this:
Very cool, but the song is called Somnus -Nemuri-. A bunch of Italian fans translated the Latin lyrics, and they thought that Nemuri was the Latin word "Nemoris," but it's actually "Nemuri," a Japanese word that has something to do with sleep/sleepiness.
Somnus is the Roman personification of sleep.
Desi
Jun 01 2007, 05:02 PM
Latin.
Lifrasthir
Jun 01 2007, 05:03 PM
So the dude who left that comment was wrong?
Desi
Jun 01 2007, 05:07 PM
Sure why not?
Lifrasthir
Jun 01 2007, 05:10 PM
Lok 'kay...But yeah, it does make sense that the name would be Latin because the lyrics to the song is Latin.
Desi
Jun 01 2007, 05:20 PM
One-Winged Angel, but yeah. I say it is Latin anyway, no need for the title to say the same thing twice.
XxFeaRLeSsxX
Jun 02 2007, 03:09 AM
What's up with people and Latin, how about Japanese? So most FF music is in Latin??
Ultima Star
Jun 02 2007, 03:14 AM
As Desi said One Winged Angel (FF7)
-Liberi Fatali (FF8)
- The Hymn of the fayth(FF 10)...I think XD

Memoro de la Ŝtono from FFXI as well. Said to be sung in Esperanto, a language that shares similarities with Latin (a lot).
Ultima Star
Jun 02 2007, 04:49 AM
So most of the FF games have songs in Latin and also use a lot of classical music
Desi
Jun 02 2007, 05:01 AM
well no, FF's use a lot of techno, pop, and classical.
Songs with lyrics are normally in japanese, english, or forms of latin.
Terros
Jun 02 2007, 05:11 AM
When do you think they'll release an official translation?
Desi
Jun 02 2007, 05:39 AM
They never do. People have to find them out themselves. Well unless the soundtracks have the lyrics but I'm to lazy to look.
Terros
Jun 02 2007, 06:47 AM
And the soundtrack usually comes out after the game...?
Desi
Jun 02 2007, 07:28 AM
Soundtracks are normally released around the same time window as the game.

Jun 03 2007, 12:31 AM
well no, FF's use a lot of techno, pop, and classical.

Well for the background most of the time are classical at least in FF VII and VIII most of the time I heard classicacl music.
But then yes there's techno:nod: and it's pretty good, The songs with Lyrics? like Eyes on Me, Suteki Da ne and the ones from FF X-2 right? well so I see FF has a wide variety of music
Terros
Jun 03 2007, 02:47 AM
Indeed, it does, you know there isn't really a FF with a primarily rock music selection.

Jun 03 2007, 04:36 AM
What about AC's one windeg angel? oh no..that was combined XD
Desi
Jun 03 2007, 04:56 AM
AC's One-Winged Angel and Still more fighting (during bahamut, boss battle music) were both rock. The original still more fighting was techno/rock mix. I forget the new name of the song though on the first black mages sountrack.
Terros
Jun 03 2007, 05:13 AM
What type of music do you think would best suit the game?
Desi
Jun 03 2007, 05:34 AM
hmm the classical, opera, insturmental music from Gears of War. Beautiful music especially when I was expecting rock. But I can see some rock here and there just no god damn pop please.
Terros
Jun 03 2007, 06:33 PM

Yes no pop, FF unfortunately has a history of bad pop music....>.> Yes I'm looking at you FFX-2.
VIII and X had bad pop music too. I just don't want it all.
Country/blue grass could work for certain celebrations or areas. I don't see rap or hip-hop working since they both rely a lot on lyrics.
Ultima Star
Jun 04 2007, 01:43 AM
Hip-hop wouldn't fit the game ^_^
I can sense lots of rock music combined with classical coming :shifty:
Desi
Jun 04 2007, 01:48 AM
Please specify between rap or hip-hop because no matter what you hear on MTV they aren't the same.
Ultima Star
Jun 04 2007, 01:56 AM
Well first I wrote it then I edit my post and put hip-hop but now I think that both wouldn't suit the game and then I said that what would suit the game was rock combined with classical ^_^
Desi
Jun 04 2007, 01:59 AM
I would love to hear a explanation though. A why.
Ultima Star
Jun 04 2007, 02:18 AM
The nature of the game....I can't imagine a king fighting and a hip-hop or rap song as the BGM...I can't >_<
Desi
Jun 04 2007, 02:48 AM
If the nature of the game is preventing it, wouldn't rock not fit either? The whole saddness/friendship theme wouldn't really go well with rock music which normally is about getting excited. We aren't discussing lyrics because you can add any lyric you want to any style of music. But instrumental rock really wouldn't fit unless it wasn't exactly rock.
Ultima Star
Jun 04 2007, 03:11 AM
perhaps for the battle scenes? you don't really want the game to be TOTALLY sad so I guess some rock, but also classical music would fit the game:)
Side note:OMG!!!! my 450th post!!!
Desi
Jun 04 2007, 03:17 AM
but you can use a classical instrumental for battle. FFXI does that and it plays out very well.
I would like to hear jazz music for battle and blues for events. Jazz battle music is some of the best.
On the discussion of rock though what type of rock. Industrial, emo, punk, alternative, pop rock, metal. See rock is to varied to just say "Rock music".
Ultima Star
Jun 04 2007, 03:20 AM
Yeah jazz would work too

Jun 04 2007, 04:07 AM
That has been done before and it was horrible...In POP, Warrior Within, they replaced the nice, indian themed soundtrack with hard rock stuff, it was bad...:(

Jun 04 2007, 04:07 AM
Hm...don't know if that'd sound good...
N O C T E
Jun 04 2007, 04:12 AM
Well, it did not sound bad per se, but when you are trying to concentrate on outrunning the Dahaka, you can't with hard rock blasting. Although it does get you pissed which is good for the game.....Lets just sya that indian soundtracks fit the games better....:D
Lifrasthir
Jun 04 2007, 04:15 AM
Hm...most likely since the game'll be dark they'll infuse alot of classical music with something eerie sounding...oh, the composer better be good.
N O C T E
Jun 04 2007, 04:21 AM
I think it would be kinda cool if they did like they do in RE4, and just not even have BGM at some parts, not only does it add to the suspense, it might fit the game well in some parts....

It makes use of the enviroment to express emotion. So a stroll through a long corridor wouldn't have music to make the trip feel longer and empty.

The music gives off a majestic yet creepy and sad feeling at the same time.
Lifrasthir
Jun 05 2007, 01:56 AM
The music is supposed to set the theme for a certain event or place. Like Those Who Fight is played when the FFVII team first fights Bahamut Zero in AC. It's faced paced (dims down for dialogue) and supposed to get the adrenaline going. So, I'm guessing most music in Versus XIII will not be smooth sailing, pleasant songs.

The tempo should depend on what's happening at that particular time in the game.
Ultima Star
Jun 06 2007, 09:22 PM
We're not going to be..let's say sleeping and with a fast tempo..or fighting with slow tempo..that's what you mean right Terros?

I it'll be that way as well.
Ultima Star
Jun 08 2007, 12:21 AM

Terros
Jun 08 2007, 01:35 AM
Like I said, the tempo will be dependant on the situation. That's what makes good music in a game, how well it goes with the game. Also what would be good is parts where there is dead silence.
Ultima Star
Jun 08 2007, 01:45 AM
Dead silence!...wow creppy  but it would suit due to the nature of the game ^_^

Terros
Jun 10 2007, 02:31 AM
Yes, the music definately captured the feel of the game. Also, they wouldn't use dead silence to find a new member of the party unless there was something really tense going on.
Ultima Star
Jun 10 2007, 03:14 AM
...tense? like if the new party member was being attacked or something?..forget it if something like that happens then we would hear a lot of screams if the new party member was a girl though XD
