How about Gale as a name for the blond haired guy?

It's weather related, sounds a bit androgynous (as in Gail), but also has quite a nice ring to it aswell, I reckon. It could fit the character, as a gale is a powerful dangerous wind, which fits his image as being a big tough guy.

(I thought of this after watching a season 2 episode of Lost which featured the character Henry Gale.)

In an interview with the Japanese gaming magazine Gemaga, Tetsuya Nomura (Final Fantasy 13’s Character Designer and Final Fantasy Versus 13’s Director) gave some new details on two of the Fabula Nova Crystallis titles.


First he talked about the new blond haired character in Final Fantasy 13, who is named “Mr. 33cm.” His name being from his shoe size. Noruma says that his combat style is humourous and that he is a rather wild person.

Maybe Square hasn't actually come up with a name for this character yet.
So they diverse and decide to call him his shoe size.

You're right - Lightning is a name she gave to herself. Although I'm not sure if she has amnesia or if she changed her name for some other reason as Square are being very vague with character details.

This thread is about guessing the name of the male blond haired character, who according to Tetsuya Nomura has a name that is something to do with the weather. His name has not been officially released by Square and there hasn't been any mention of him having amnesia.

Also...Since Lightning's the main it makes sense that the other characters wouldn't have weather related names, because for the most part (in past games) it was only the main character who had a weather related name.

It came from an article in a Japanese Playstation magazine. There's a news story about it on this site, if you go to the front page and click on page 3 of the news there's an article from the 10th Jan 2007 about new Dengeki Playstation FFXIII Scans, where it says:

"There isn't much new information on the new characters except that the new character is named after some form of weather"



Also...Since Lightning's the main it makes sense that the other characters wouldn't have weather related names, because for the most part (in past games) it was only the main character who had a weather related name.

Don't forget that FFVIII had Laguna (sounds like Lagoon) and Raine (rain). FFX had Tidus (Okinawan dialect for sun) and Yuna (moon). Also, Kingdom Hearts had Sora (sky), Riku (land) and Kairi (sea). There are probably a load more, but those are the ones first that come to mind.

No they changed it to Bartz ever since it was released in the US not just the GBA version.

Ichijin and Kumo do sound like cool names. One thing I have noticed though is there isn't many VERY Japanese looking names like Ichijin. I suppose it's because of it's popularity over seas. I hope they do have some really original names in the game though.

Well I did say for the most part :) Out of 12 games those few aren't that many, and Tidus was the main character so that just fits with my....thesis?.....Idea?....Statement? XD

Yeah, that's fine - although I only mentioned the KH characters because they were also designed by Tetsuya Nomura. He does seem to love weather related names though, doesn't he? Makes me wonder if one day he'll run out of good ones!

Tetsuya Nomura is 36 years old (born October 8 1970 according to wikipedia) so I don't think he'll die any time soon! Unless he has an accident of course, or is involved in some kind of random tragedy...hang on a minute, now I'm the one being morbid!
