I was just emailed this message: "FFXIII Soundtrack Artists Revealed". There was nothing else in the email, no link, no proof but I thought I'd look into it. The email was from someone @IGN.com so I started there. I ended up finding a blog claiming there is a rumor that a band called Telefon Tel Aviv is doing the FFXIII main theme.

http://blogs.ign.com/JRob-IGN/2007/03/08/48769/

If you read the blog they say its rumored that this band is doing the main theme...but there isn't any evidence what so ever. I looked into the band and I didnt find anything there except they're from Chicago and are huge fans of video games.

Anyone have any proof at all of this? :P I hope they do have a better main theme in this game than XII's Kiss me Good Bye by Angela Aki.

Has Square Enix released any information about the theme song?

Nothing at all yet. This blog is the only thing we've heard about it. :/

I hated that song. Maybe it was because the only time I heard the song it was just the piano. But now listening to the actually recorded version it's okay.

I don't think the blog mentioned anything about Telefon Tel Aviv doing the main theme; instead I think they're may just doing overall music.

Quote from the biography on their website:

Telefon Tel Aviv is now approaching it's 8th year in the unending endeavor to acheive the complete hybridization of music:: formally, stylistically, and sonically. This attempt to quantify and qualify nostalgia in a physical sense will continue as Telefon Tel Aviv strives to reach this end, which seemingly cannot be met.

Pretty deep, huh? ;p Have a listen at their music on their website.

I think this kind of music would be suitable for the RPG genre, considering the RPG time-consuming story aspect of traveling around the world. I really enjoyed Nobuo Uematsu's music, as it really connected the player with the game; even though his music was made for games, I'm sure it could stand on its own. From what I heard of the music from Telefon Tel Aviv on their website, it does have a certain "sit-back-and-relax" style/mood to it, but if they're going to do the majority of the music for the game, hopefully they can inspire more than just nostalgia, reflection, and stillness but tension, fear, and excitement as well.

There is a major difference in music types between 12 and 13. Still im more for a techno or trance type of music. Though I do love the occasional classic, I do hope we get a burst of adrenaline song though :) .

I noticed [at least in the trailer] that the music had adapted some sort of Asian music techniques. I thought that was pretty cool!

I enjoyed it too. ^_^ Maybe it was because of the Asian musical techniques. I dunno. But the music is telling us about about a fast battle. Or something along the lines of that.

I don't know if this is exactly what you were stating but I found this.

If you scroll down to the very bottom it says that the main theme is done by Nobuo Uematsu. So Telefon Tel Aviv could be doing some of the overall music. But what I'm wondering is, if Telefon Tel Aviv [TTA] is doing the overall music, why would they just have Nobuo Uematsu do the main theme?

I'm not sure that site is conveying the correct information. I was under the perspective that Nobuo Uematsu was no longer composing for Final Fantasy.

Nobuo is the theme song composer but not the games composer. He's only doing composing the one song for the game.

 You about gave me a heart attack when you said that. :'( I love Nobuo Uematsu's music and would hate to see him leave Square Enix. Thanks Kimitsu for clearing things up a little. ^_^

Nobuo Uematsu has indeed left Square Enix. He founded Smile Please Co., Ltd in 2004 as his own independent music production company. You can check out the website here (only in Japanese unfortunately)

http://www.smileplease.co.jp/

The company works on a 'for hire' contract basis, so potentially any games company could hire him to make music for their games. This is how he now works with Square Enix - he is no longer an employee, but they contract his Smile Please company to provide music for some of their games. Currently Uematsu and Smile Please are doing the music for the Mistwalker games Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, and as various people have mentioned here, one of the main themes in FFXIII.

his profile is on Mistwalker Creators page...so that means his main projects are mistwalker games right?!

i wouldnt mind if Yoko Kanno composed Final Fantasy songs <3

Uematsu's main projects at the moment are the two Mistwalker games, but through Smile Please he can work with whoever he chooses. It's up to companies to offer him work, and then he can just pick and choose which projects he wants to work on. Essentially now it means he only works on games that he likes.

It was rumoured on various websites a while back that Square wanted to hire him to do the music for Dirge of Cerberus, but Uematsu declined because he didn't like the game (he said games just about shooting stuff didn't appeal to him).

It's probable that he will continue to provide music for future Mistwalker games if only because he is great friends with Hironobu Sakaguchi. I expect he will continue to work with Square but probably in a reduced capacity - only doing the projects that interest him.

As a side note, the main composer for Final Fantasy XIII is Masashi Hamauzu ( who provided an awesome soundtrack for Unlimited Saga).
For Final Fantasy Versus XIII the composer is Yoko Shimomura who also did the Kingdom Hearts series.

HAUhauHAuAHu jesus...this Versus is really giving me impression of a dark version of Kingdom Hearts XD

bleh, i would love if Yoko Kanno composed some songs for FFXIII...something Ghost in the Shell like...

Yeah, so did I.

But for FFXIII and FF Versus XIII. It would be Hamauzu and Shimomura

Final Fantasy XIII - Masashi Hamauzu
Final Fantasy Versus XIII - Yoko Shimomura (also composing for Heroes of Mana).

I'm sure they'll do a really good job.

In my opinion they couldn't have chosen 2 better people than Hamauzu and Shimomura to score FFXIII and Versus (aside from Nobuo Uematsu, of course).

Masashi Hamauzu did an amazing job with Unlimited Saga - it may be one of Square's most loathed games of recent times, but pretty much everyone agrees that the soundtrack was awesome and was the best part of the game.

Yoko Shimomora is also excellent and her work on the Kingdom Hearts games was emotional, dramatic and exciting. I can't wait to hear what these two come up with for the new games.

Who exaclty are Telefon Tele aviv? Are they the studio where the music is being recorded or are they making the music along with Masashi Hamauzu? I listened to some of the music on the site and i liked it. It kinda fits the atmosphere in FFXIII from what ive seen so far imo. And that guy who sent you the email, did he say exactly WHERE he heard these news?

Final Fantasy 12 music was disappointing in my opinion. It was majestically fitting with the medievalish setting, but I thought it was too forgettable. Final Fantasy X music was magical though, and the song in the XIII trailer was very good (in my opinion). I wish that Nobou would come back to SE full-time!

Yeah, the music in XII is sad compared to the other games.... Dang, why did Nobuo Uematsu had to leave? Who's making the music for XIII?

"And in a surprise announcement from the 2006 E3 show, it was revealed that Hamauzu would be returning to the Final Fantasy series, scoring Final Fantasy XIII (Nobou Uematsu will provide the opening theme)."

I bet that opening theme will be amazing. ^_^

Thou reading this: http://www.youngcomposers.com/articles/Masashi-Hamauzu
made me feel secure that FFXIII will have great musics.
